- Identifier / CWE
- CVE-2026-82096
CWE-78 - Action timing
- Immediate
Explain it like I’m five
DataStage builds system commands out of user input without cleaning it, so a signed-in user can sneak in extra commands of their own.
- 01Sign in
An attacker with a valid DataStage account reaches the affected function.
- 02Injected elements
The attacker adds special elements that DataStage fails to neutralize before building a command.
- 03Command executes
The operating system runs the attacker's command with DataStage's privileges.
What happened
IBM disclosed CVE-2026-82096 in its DataStage on Cloud Pak for Data bulletin. Version 5.4.0.0 is affected. The flaw is improper neutralization of special elements used in an OS command (CWE-78), exploitable by an authenticated remote attacker.
No fixed version is named in the NVD record, so remediation follows the IBM bulletin rather than a version guess here.
What to do
- Inventory every DataStage on Cloud Pak for Data deployment, including test, training, and individually managed instances.
- Apply the vendor fix or upgrade exactly as directed in the linked vendor bulletin or advisory.
- Restrict network access to DataStage on Cloud Pak for Data while remediation is underway, especially for internet-facing instances.
- Review application and server logs for unexpected shell processes spawned by DataStage, command strings in request logs, and new local accounts or scheduled jobs.
- Check for accounts, content, or configuration created outside normal change processes, and rotate exposed credentials where access cannot be ruled out.
- Verify the deployed version or patch level after remediation.
Management note
Command injection in a data platform is effectively server access. Apply the IBM fix and check the host, not just the application.
