- CVE-2026-96207
CWE-295 - Action timing
- Immediate
Explain it like I’m five
Partner Center accepted any ID badge without checking whether it was real. An attacker with a fake badge could claim any partner's authority.
- 01Attacker connects
An unauthenticated attacker initiates a network connection to Partner Center presenting a malformed or untrusted certificate.
- 02Validation skipped
The certificate validation logic does not properly verify the certificate chain or identity.
- 03Privileges elevated
The attacker is treated as a trusted party and elevates privileges, with high confidentiality and integrity impact.
What happened
Microsoft disclosed CVE-2026-96207 in Microsoft Partner Center on October 8, 2026. The service improperly validated certificates, allowing an unauthenticated attacker to elevate privileges over the network. It scores 10.0 on CVSS 3.1 (network, low complexity, no privileges or user interaction required, changed scope, high confidentiality and integrity impact). NVD marks the entry as exclusively a hosted-service issue, so the fix lands on Microsoft’s side.
What to do
- No customer patch exists to apply; Microsoft remediates the service.
- Partner Center is the gateway to customer tenancies, so treat this as high-priority triage: review partner relationships, admin relationships, and delegated access in your tenant.
- Check audit logs for unexpected privilege grants or tenant access changes around October 8, 2026.
- Rotate any partner-delegated credentials if suspicious activity cannot be excluded.
- Watch for a Microsoft post-incident notice with exposure details.
Management note
A 10.0 in the partner ecosystem is the one to take personally: Partner Center is exactly where impersonation turns into other people’s tenants. Even with the fix on Microsoft’s side, verify your tenant’s delegated-access graph is still exactly what you authorized.
